Germany and Japan
Dear Newsgroup: The expansion of Japan in the area is essential to balance the forces between two large populated nations (over a billion) and with nuclear capabilities; these are countries of China and India. Thus I would like to suggest the following: 1-South Korea will be the colony of Japan 2-North Korea will be a colony of Germany and Japan (half each).... more »

total vs partial derivative
Hi, I have unfortunately forgotten my basic calculus.... I have a problem regarding partial vs. total derivatives. I have a function f(x,y) = ax - by. Also, x and y are not independent: x = c - (y-1)^2. My goal is to find the ratio of sensitivities of f with respect to x and y. In other words, if I want f to remain constant, and I know x is... more »

Maplesoft Maple
Hi guys. I hope I'm posting a question related to what this forum covers. I'm a computer scientist and hobbyist mathematician. I recently purchased Maple 11 for Linux and I installed it. I don't use Windows Operating System therefore I can't tell. Ok, the question is... Is Maple 11 written in Java? I see that the installer installs... more »

France and Germany
Dear Newsgroup: So far you have seen my colonial expansions for many countries as well as France. As mentioned before the nature of colonies will be completely for the best interests of the mother country as well as their colonies (not like slavery in WWII Germany). Thus it is expected that the mother countries provide health,... more »

Optimization of multiple depentent objectives?
Hello, I am wondering if it makes sense to optimize two depentent objectives using a multi-objective algorithm. The objectives are related to each other as follows: A = B * C where A and B are the two objectives to be maximized. C is not constant. The variables A, B, and C are real variables bounded to the range 0 to 1.... more »

Range of a two-variable polynomial
I recently learned from the book "Mathematical Omnibus" by Fuchs and Tabachnikov that problem A1 on the 1969 Putnam turned out to be much harder than intended because the people setting the exam had an incorrect "solution" in mind. Only 1% of the test takers scored 8/10 or higher. The crux of the matter was this: Let f be a polynomial function from... more »
